Without further delay, let’s dive right into this week’s post. When you’re done reading through it, please be sure to share the link to this page with your friends and neighbors at your apartments in Daytona.
Connect with nature at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge
Drive time from Daytona Beach: 1 hour 21 minutes
If you’ve lived in Florida for awhile without seeing an alligator, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge is your best bet for catching a glimpse of these awesome creatures. There are a couple mile-long hiking trails that wind through this wildlife refuge, and they’re filled with various bird species, butterflies and small mammals running through the foliage. Merritt Island is a peaceful place, and you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere even though you’re just an hour outside Daytona Beach.
Explore the universe from the Kennedy Space Center
Drive time from Daytona Beach: 1 hour 6 minutes
Visiting the Kennedy Space Center can be awe-inspiring, but it takes an entire day to see the museum, grounds and space exploration facilities. We recommend waking up early if you want to make it happen. Be sure to sign up to take the tour bus out past the launch pads or else you’ll miss one of the coolest parts of the Kennedy Space Center experience!
One of the best moments of your trip will happen after you watch the IMAX movie about the space shuttle. After the movie ends, a panel opens up to reveal the actual space shuttle that they’ve been talking about throughout the film. It’s old and rusted, but it’s still pretty amazing.
Spend a day in St. Augustine, FL
Drive time from Daytona Beach: 1 hour 7 minutes
For a relaxing day with your significant other, head down to St. Augustine and explore the historic district. We highly recommend grabbing lunch at St. Augustine’s Cafe Alcazar. This upscale lunch spot is actually located in what used to be the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. That’s probably hard to imagine, but you can click here to see what we’re talking about.
Be sure to stop by Fort Matanzas on your way back from St. Augustine. This fort played a major role in the struggle between European settlers who sought control of the area. One of the oldest forts in the U.S., the fort was designated for historic status in 1924, and looks every bit as old as it is.
With that, we’ve reached the end of our list of day trip destinations. Have fun visiting these nearby hotspots, and let us know if you enjoy them as much as we have!
